LIVE REVIEW: ALEX HUTTON TRIO @ FRONT ROOM, ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL

"Alex Hutton is one of those pianists whose rare concert appearances are a reminder of just how good he is. Playing for a lunchtime crowd at Royal Festival Hall in September, Hutton concentrated on material from his recent ‘Legentis’ album , alternating hammered, chordal figures as on ‘JJ’ with Jarrett-like calmness on Clouds, these punctuated by sudden, stabbing figures and dramatic twists and turns. However well he knows these pieces, you sense for such a resourceful improviser that there’s always more to be revealed. Drummer Asaf Sirkis was similarly inventive, his thunderclap interjections followed by puttering , brush-based time on a final, swinging version of ‘I’ll Be Seeing You."
